In the 12th month of the Hindu calendar, Phalguna, people celebrate the vibrant festival of Holi. This festival is also referred to as the festival of colors, love, and spring, and is commemorated by large groups of people in India and various other parts of the world.

The Hindu legend of Holika and Prahlad is associated with Holi. In this legend, Hiranyakashyap, a demon king, had a son named Prahlad who refused to worship him. Hiranyakashyap made several attempts to kill Prahlad, but Lord Vishnu always saved him.

Holi Celebrations In 2023

To eliminate Prahlad, Hiranyakashyap convinced his sister, Holika, to take Prahlad on her lap and sit in a blazing fire, assuming that Holika's protection from the fire would save her. However, Prahlad continuously chanted Lord Vishnu's name, and he was saved again, while Holika was burnt alive.

As a result, the celebration of Holika Dahan, or the burning of Demon Holika during Holi, is a symbolic representation of the triumph of good over evil.

In addition to symbolizing the victory of good over evil, Holi is also an occasion that promotes unity and joy, marking the arrival of spring and the end of winter. The Ohio University's Indian Students Association recently organized a Holi celebration, which took place last Saturday.

Holi is An Important Festival Of Indians

Abhinil Ghosal, a second-year PhD student studying chemistry, shared that students from all over the world participated in the festivities. On the day of Holi, as reported by The Indian Times, people play with colored powders, which are usually mixed with water and thrown at each other, adding to the festive spirit.

Holi, considered as one of the most significant festivals in Hinduism, has been celebrated for centuries. According to Datta, the interpretation of Holi's history varies among people. Sonali Jha, a first-year PhD student studying mass communication and media studies, shared that she is familiar with three different versions of its origin.

One of the reasons behind the celebration of Holi is its symbolism of the love between Lord Krishna and Radha, and their union as Radhakrishna.

Typically, Holi is played in the morning, leaving room for feasting in the afternoon and evening. Datta noted that she has only seen groups of up to 50 people celebrating together.

At the heart of Holi is the celebration of choosing good over evil, love, and spring. As winter ends, spring brings the promise of renewal and new beginnings. "We celebrate it because spring is coming, it spreads love among society," Ghosal explained.
